How it works

The four sessions

The currency market runs 24 hours from Monday to Friday, split across four sessions: Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York. We use indicative local trading hours (for example London 8:00 to 17:00 local time) and respect daylight saving changes.

Overlaps, especially London–New York, concentrate the highest volume and usually offer tighter spreads and wider moves. The Asian night is typically quieter for pairs like EUR/USD.

Frequently asked questions

Which session has the most volume?

London is the largest, and the London–New York overlap concentrates the day’s highest liquidity.

Do the hours adjust for daylight saving?

Yes. We compute each city’s local time using its real time zone, so changes are applied automatically.

Are these official hours?

They are commonly used indicative hours. Your broker may have different trading hours, especially for metals, indices and crypto.

When does the forex market close?

It closes on Friday afternoon (New York time) and reopens on Sunday afternoon with the Sydney open.
